I learned the secret to making a good smoothie
And pasta with nutritional yeast
I made a painting of David Bowie
You made a mixed tape for me

And I thought I could be
Revolutionary
But it's harder than you'd think
And I'm so glad you forgave me

Five years is a long, long time
And anything would start to get old
But my advice for next time
Is to get out before you get cold

And I thought I could be
Fine on my own
But life is hard enough as it is
And it's harder when you're alone

Am I wrong not to call you on your birthday
Were you wrong to string me along
You knew you'd never give me what I want
But everyone likes to sing sad songs

And I thought I would win
If I could just persist
Now I've learned my lesson
You've got to know when you should quit

You should take the advice of your friends
You should spend more time with them
A good way to waste a big chunk of your life is in a bad relationship
And now I'm listening to the Violent Femmes, wishing I could sound like them

And I'd say kiss off into the wind
To all of the bad days that I've had

And we've gotta be stronger than our memories
We've all rode in time machines that brought us where we are today
We've gotta see that the past is our enemy and it can't do anything
Except get in our way
