Two Weeks Last Summer Songtext

The dancing flames grow low
Burning embers start to glow
Pictures soon will fade
Pictures that the flames have made
Your hazy wistful face
Suddenly is gone without a trace.

Summer days all float downstream,
Wondering where the day has been
Boats that sail away at night
Come the day have sailed far out of sight.

Reminiscing, summer walks
Empty glances, moonlit talks
[Promises that mean so much
Broken with a single touch/
Candy floss and ice cream cones
Discotheques and Rolling Stones]
Passing fancies fly away
Empty shadows on a sunlit bay.

Summer days all [I] float downstream,
Wondering where the day has been
Boats that sail away at night
Come the day have sailed far out of sight.

[Deserted evenings warm and still
Strangers come and go at will
Driftwood on the silent shore
Laughter from an open door.
Friendly faces once again
Come inside before it starts to rain.]

Summer days all float downstream,
Wondering where the day has been
Boats that sail away at night
Come the day have sailed far out of sight.

Strawberry Sampler No. 1, 1969, Side 1, Track 4

The words in square brackets [] are from a different version of the song. Sandy Denny originally sang the song on the early recordings the Strawbs did with her in Denmark which weren't released other than on the private pressing Strawberry Music Sampler. After Sandy left Fairport she formed Fotheringay which released an album and a single but which had recorded a number of tracks for a second album including "Two Weeks Last Summer". The story goes that Sandy rang Dave up and asked him to write an extra verse which he obligingly did. It would seem that he cut out topical references (back in 1968) to "discothequesand rolling stones" which may have seemed a bit naff by 1971 though he left them in for his own version of the song rerecorded for his solo album Two Weeks Last Summer in 1972. The original Strawbs version with Sandy's vocal didn't make the Pickwick label release of the Sandy Denny tapes All Our Own Work (which came out in the wake of the success of Part of the Union") but had to wait for full release until the Sandy Denny rather than Strawbs oriented Hannibal release "Sandy and the Strawbs" overseen by Joe Boyd. The amended Sandy version emerged on the monumental boxed set retrospective "Who Knows Where The Time Goes".
