Soldier of fortune, standing on the hillside
His horse was resting by the willow tree
But the forces of evil were gathering in the mountains
While the village bathed in the midday sun
The old men bent their backs to their labour
The young maidens' laughter trickled down from the hills

Then he rode on his horse
Past the fields of destruction
He could hear the music from the land of the free
And he tried not to look at the towers on the hillside
Standing dark against the sunrise

He finally came to the gates of a castle
Where the bells started ringing and the peacocks displayed
Ladies-in-waiting wiped the dust from his body
That night he dreamed of a girl who was waiting
Alone in the darkness for her soldier of fortune

While he was sleeping his sword was blessed by a wandering angel
She kissed him so sweetly he thought he was dreaming
But his mind was clear and his soul was free
And the flags waved bravely as they marched into battle

When he reached the sea a ship was waiting
The clouds were low and the guards were sleeping
On the further shore his girl was waving
And his hounds came running to guide him home
