Benny liked to play bluegrass
But he'd play any kind of tune
Just to stand with a bow in his hand
And his back to the band at willy's saloon
When the gig was over he wouldn't go to bed
He'd call 'round tom's house instead
Tom would meet him at the door with a guitar on
'cause nobody loved bluegrass more than benny
Except maybe tom

Tom put on the coffee
And they'd play 'til the sun came up
They were never silent longer than the time
It take to fill a coffee cup
And in the morning tom's little boy would rise
See the red in the whites of his daddy's eyes
And he'd know without having to ask
That benny'd been over
He and his daddy been playing bluegrass

Benny took a turn for the worst
He were never in the best of health
And who of us are in this world of bars
And bands who like our liquor too well
I heard it from my wife she heard it from chris
The news was bad like most news is
Benny is gone from this world that's what they say
But I ain't so sure
When I go 'round to tom's and we play

And tom puts on the coffee
And we play 'til the sun come up
